New Draft Inclusion, Diversity, Equality and Accessibility Action Plan

Published on June 12, 2023

ASONE Hub earlier this week published our first Inclusion, Diversity, Equality and Accessibility action plan. We are now holding an open consultation process on the document, wishing to gather feedback and welcome conversation over the content.

Why do we need an IDEA Plan?

The National Plan for Music Education states that “music education should be fully inclusive so that all music educators: commit to achieving greater access and more opportunity, and identifying and removing barriers, take action to support increasing access, opportunity, participation, and progression of groups that are currently under-represented in music.”

It is clear that we have achieved some really positive advancements in inclusive music education in Cornwall, but the landscape and challenges are ever-changing and therefore we need an action plan and a commitment to EDI which is flexible and reflective.

How have we developed the Draft Plan?

In January we welcomed Annie Sheen (Programme Manager at Music for Good) and Steve Hawker (EDI Lead for Cornwall Music Service Trust - CMST) to take forward the Hub’s Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Strategy. This builds on previous strategic work led by Dr Phil Mullen.

Steve and Annie have met with a range of stakeholders and drawn on a number of resources and best practice to develop the plan. We now have a draft IDEA (Inclusion, Diversity, Equality and Accessibility) Action Plan which sets out 5 priority areas for 2023-2025. We welcome our partners to offer feedback on the contents of the plan before we publish a final version in July 2023.

How to learn more and have your say

Because our IDEA plan is central to our business plan, it will be monitored by the Hub steering group and updated on an annual basis. The steering group will be meeting for a special IDEA-themed meeting on 7th June to discuss the action plan. We will be producing a detailed IDEA Progress Tracker document which will help us to monitor and report on our progress.

The Hub’s IDEA Working Group continue to meet once a term. This group come together to identify needs, share information and develop partnership work. If you would like to join this group please let us know.

You can learn more about the draft action plan and how to feedback your thoughts and ideas in this short video presentation.

We will be holding Q&A sessions about our new IDEA strategy and how it relates to other areas of Hub delivery. We would love to have the opportunity to talk to you further then so please do sign up.
