Case Study: Hubbub 2024
CASE STUDY 2024
Project Overview
The Hubbub Festival 2024 brought together 12 primary schools for a collaborative music and performance project, centred around a collective performance outcome. This pilot initiative allowed students to build and consolidate musical skills, culminating in a large-scale performance showcasing their learning.
Activity
- Introduced the concept of a 4/4 time signature, teaching students about note divisions and rhythm through hands-on practice with tables and instruments.
- Introduced the concept of a 4/4 time signature, teaching students about note divisions and rhythm through hands-on practice with body percussion, voices and instruments.
- Conducted multiple skill-building workshops, including guitar (open chords), choir (lyrics and vocal technique), percussion (rhythmic patterns), beatboxing (timekeeping), and dance (synchronized movement to music).
- Added a didgeridoo workshop for a drone in the key of C, creating a cohesive background tone for the performance.
- Concluded with a synchronised performance where all participating schools joined together, using dancers to maintain rhythmic cohesion across the large space, allowing students to perform as a unified ensemble.
Impact
The project successfully engaged primary students in a multi-faceted music experience, enabling them to learn and perform in an immersive environment. Feedback highlighted the program’s effectiveness in teaching rhythm, timekeeping, and collaborative performance. Students reported feeling more confident in their musical abilities, and teachers observed enhanced engagement in music learning.
Legacy
The success of this three-phase model (classroom preparation, skill-building workshops, and consolidated performance) has set the groundwork for future Hubbub festivals. ASONE Hub plans to continue this approach, reinforcing musical concepts in a progressive, engaging way and expanding the collective performance model to more schools

Further comments/information
ASONE Hub is excited to develop the Hubbub Festival model further, fostering a collaborative and supportive music education environment. This approach provides young students with a comprehensive and enjoyable path to developing foundational music skills. There is a plan to develop an archive of musical content that schools can use for future cohorts of students.
