Hubbub Brings Rhythm and Joy to over 200 Pupils at Royal Cornwall Events Centre

Published on August 8, 2025

On 25th June, over 200 pupils from nine schools across Cornwall gathered at the Royal Cornwall Events Centre for Hubbub - a full day of music, rhythm, and creative expression.

Designed especially for KS2 learners, Hubbub offered hands-on workshops led by exceptional artists and educators. Each session explored this year’s theme: 2 | 4 | 6 | 8 - numbers that show up everywhere in music, from beats and harmony to song structure and movement.

From jazz improvisation and beatboxing to samba, string techniques and recycled percussion, students rotated through a variety of sessions packed with energy and imagination. Each workshop took a unique approach to rhythm and structure, layering patterns and building musical parts in groups.

Workshops included:

  • ‘Blow That Brass!’ with Steph Barry
Students discovered the power of brass through call and response, jazz rhythms, and improvisation.

  • Beatboxing with Danny Ladwa (School of Beatbox)
Using only their voices, students created beats, rhythms, and sound effects to explore timing and teamwork.
  • ‘Bow-less Bonanza’ with Ben Sutcliffe
Pupils explored pizzicato and body percussion to make rhythm without bows - building a piece in four parts using the 2, 4, 6, 8 theme.
  • West African Rhythm with Diabel Cissokho
A vibrant journey into rhythm, movement and language through body percussion and singing in Mandinka.
  • Trash Orchestra with Marc (Rhythm Connections)
Students made music with recycled and repurposed objects, learning about pitch, rhythm, and sustainability.
  • Samba with Zenabeatz
A high-energy session with Brazilian percussion, where students explored ensemble playing and carnival energy.

What Schools said:

"To arrive and be immersed straight into workshops with such passionate experts was incredible. The range on offer was superb - the children struggled to choose a favourite (as did the adults!)”

“A fun-filled, inspiring day with high enthusiasm and engagement. All loved it!”

Hubbub continues to showcase the power of live, creative experiences in inspiring the next generation of young musicians. By giving pupils access to expert artists, new instruments, and joyful experimentation, the event reinforces ASONE Hub’s commitment to inclusive, high-quality music education across Cornwall.

We’re already looking forward to next year’s Hubbub and the many young voices, rhythms, and ideas it will bring.
