A voice to Midi controller - Research and development for the education sector in Cornwall

Published on November 24, 2022

Dubler 2 (made by “Vochlea) is a powerful piece of software that allows the user to turn their voice (or any other monophonic sound) into real time midi data for recording, scoring and live audio articulation.  Already a huge hit with producers who want to convert their ideas directly into midi data within a DAW, Dubler 2 is now finding a home within the world of music education but not just as a device to input midi data; already educators are finding exciting ways to use the intricate control panel of the Dubler 2 software to lead music activities, challenge vocal exploration and gamify the learning experience.  From live audio manipulation on the stage to illustrating musical fundamentals in the classroom, the Dubler 2 feels like the babble stone of music making. With a Dubler 2 set up, users who have not had the chance to learn how to read and write music can still communicate ideas with classically trained musicians by simply singing the lines that they want to articulate.

ASONE Hub is very excited to be working with Vochlea on helping teachers, students, and youth leaders to develop new ways of using the Dubler 2 platform. After a short demo of the Dubler 2 architecture at our Autumn Music Conference we have been inundated with requests for introductions to the Vochlea team as teachers see opportunities for everything from inclusion, scaffolded learning to extension tasks and efficiency savings. Liam Cutler (Education outreach for Vochlea and product specialist) has been receiving numerous requests from our colleagues across the county and is kindly facilitating the supply of demo licenses to select educational specialists.  ASONE Hub will help compile case studies over the next few months with the specific aim of understanding how the software and hardware can be used within educational settings and how it can be developed further to support learners!

The Hub has already taken part in a highly successful program of activity at Nine Maidens Alternative Provision school and Trelya community hub, where the students and teachers enjoyed learning about pitch, harmonic intervals, rhythm, harmony, and music technology using Dubler 2.  We are now excited to see how the software performs in larger classes with multiple units running simultaneously.
