The Sixteen Work with Cornish Schools
The Learning & Participation team of world-renowned choral group “The Sixteen” visited Cornwall last week, working with young singers across the county. The activities were centered around schools in the Looe, Callington and St Ives catchment areas and were part of an Arts Council funded initiative to develop opportunities for young people to engage with classical arts and community music making activities.
Over the three-day project the Sixteen team engaged with well over three hundred young people, delivering a selection of workshops that both challenged existing singers whilst inspiring new vocalists. Kate Jones - Deputy head at St Ives school described the project as “a transformative opportunity for students and staff to participate as part of a world class vocal ensemble and an especially important illustration of how important group singing is for wellbeing. The Sixteen team demonstrated how careers within the arts could be accessed even from our rural location.”
The ASONE Hub school and community engagement team were thrilled to be a part of pulling together such a successful activity and very much enjoyed making new friends in the process. A huge thanks to the team at the Sixteen choir and ASONE Hub; the schools of Cornwall are already looking forwards to your next visit!
A huge thank you to everyone in Cornwall who helped to make these workshops possible. We were immensely encouraged by the breadth of musical activities already taking place within Cornwall, in schools and the wider community, and we were truly blown away by the talent of the young people we encountered. We left Cornwall feeling full of hope for the musicians of the future.
