A new music curriculum for primary schools across the nation

Published on February 5, 2026

A new set of publicly funded music teaching resources for primary schools across the UK has been launched through a national partnership led by Oak National Academy, Bristol Beacon and Amplify Education.

The Oak National Academy Primary Music Curriculum is a free programme designed to support inclusive, ambitious and engaging music education for pupils in Years 1 - 6. Developed with input from schools, teachers, artists and cultural organisations, the curriculum aims to help all children develop their musicianship while fostering creativity, wellbeing and a long-term connection to music.

Designed with teachers in mind, the resources include ready-to-use lessons alongside guidance to support planning, classroom delivery and curriculum development. Content is carefully sequenced and explores music’s role in storytelling, identity and social change, with an emphasis on accessibility and inclusion.

In total, the curriculum comprises 36 learning units, with six units per year group across Key Stages 1 and 2. Each unit includes six lessons, creating 216 lessons overall. All content is aligned with national curriculum requirements and uses practical activities, performance, listening and real-world musical examples, supported by high-quality digital materials.

The resources are published on Oak National Academy’s website under Crown copyright, making them free to access for all primary schools nationwide.
