ASONE Hub Visits Parliament to Champion Local Music Education

Published on September 29, 2025

ASONE Hub’s Head of Programme, Millie Young, joined Music Hub leaders from across the country in Westminster recently for an inspiring afternoon connecting parliamentarians with their local Music Hubs. The event aimed to ensure that MPs and peers shaping national education policy understand the music opportunities thriving in their own constituencies.

Hosted by the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Music Education, the session encouraged MPs to visit hubs back home and champion their work. Leaders shared powerful success stories but also raised concerns, especially about funding. Music Mark’s Chair, Peter Smalley, reminded everyone that if investment in hubs had simply kept pace with inflation since 2012, budgets would be 43% higher today.

The call to action for MPs was simple: Be Present, Be a Champion, Be an Advocate. By showing up at local music events, celebrating achievements publicly, and supporting hubs in policy conversations, parliamentarians can make a real difference for young people’s access to music.

Despite these challenges, the day was alive with optimism and music, including performances from young musicians alongside saxophonist Jess Gillam MBE. It was a vivid reminder of the life-changing impact of music education.

ASONE Hub is encouraged to see these bridges being built. Although no Cornish MPs were able to attend on this occasion, we look forward to connecting with them locally to share the impact of music education in Cornwall. Stronger links between decision-makers and those delivering music education mean better opportunities for young people and perhaps future MPs who found their voice through music.
