CELT Youth Orchestra Launches with Inspiring First Rehearsal

Published on October 1, 2025

Last week, an exciting milestone for music across CELT schools took place; the launch of a brand new youth orchestra, bringing together talented young musicians from five secondary schools under the dynamic leadership of conductor Patrick Bailey.

This collaborative project has created a vibrant and unified ensemble, giving students a chance to play in a full symphony orchestra and experience music-making on a larger scale. One of the most powerful aspects of the new group is the way it welcomes and celebrates instruments that are often underrepresented in individual school ensembles. From tubas and French horns to violins and timpani, players were able to hear their parts come alive within the rich texture of the full orchestra - for many, it was a first-time experience.

The opening rehearsal was not only a musical success but also a joyful social event. Students from across CELT schools, many meeting for the first time, quickly connected through their shared love of music. The room was filled with energy, enthusiasm, and a growing sense of community.

Bethany Wade, CELT Lead for Music and Head of Music at Newquay Tretherras, reflected:

“Our music departments are working together in such an inspiring way. The orchestra achieved remarkable progress in just one session, and students left feeling excited for what’s next. We are incredibly fortunate to have Patrick Bailey leading - his ability to motivate young musicians and bring out their best made the day both productive and uplifting. Patrick will also be returning next month to host the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra Concert.”

The orchestra will meet once every half term, giving students regular opportunities to rehearse, perform, and develop as musicians while building friendships across schools.

This project has also been supported by School Project funding and is a strong example of a Progression Project, helping young musicians move forward in their musical journey and access new opportunities.

With such a strong start, we’re excited about the journey ahead and the music this new CELT Youth Orchestra will create in the months to come. More than just an ensemble, this initiative is a celebration of collaboration, inclusion, and the transformative power of music.
